ADOPTING
A SANDY PAWS SCHIPPERKE
Most schips that come through Sandy Paws have normally had a "hard"
life - broken homes, abuse, neglect. When they arrive, it is our ULTIMATE
goal to be sure that dog is not only loved and well cared for while it is
being fostered but that the new forever home is a perfect fit for that dog.
In order to do this and do it right, we have many steps that are required
before the dog is placed with the new family.
First, our application and terms of adoption paperwork need to be filled out
by the prospective family and returned to Sandy Paws. These forms are rather
extensive and explore past history with pets, living environment, references
(both personal and vet) etc. The terms of adoption is the family's sworn vow
that they will take care of this dog to their utmost ability, providing adequate
medical care, food, shelter and the like.
This application is then reviewed by Sandy Paws and all references are contacted.
We are looking for families whose medical care with current pets is up to
date and the personal references sing nothing but praises for the family as
pet owners. If there is anything that pops up during this application process
that we do not like or approve of, the application is refused. Sandy Paws
has the right to refuse any applicant! (One thing we want to mention right
here, we do not place any Schipperke's in homes without a fenced yard or some
form of restraint to keep the dog home. Period.)
If all things on the application look good and check out, then the next step
is the home visit. Everyone can look good on paper so it is important for
a Sandy Paws representative to come to the house to explore fencing, environment
and interaction between family members and current pets. The new family will
then be interviewed as to why they want this particular dog etc. All findings
are compiled and compared with the application -- it is at this time that
Sandy Paws makes the final decision whether or not the dog goes to that home
or not. Also, we want to mention that Sandy Paws does NOT have a spay/neuter
contract as ALL schips that leave here are already altered.
If approved, the new family will be required to pay an adoption fee for the
dog. This fee is to recoup vet expenses for the animal so most fees will vary
depending on the medical expense spent on the dog to achieve maximum health.
We do not ask for any compensation for food, gas, time etc. -- only veterinary
care.
The schip is then placed in the home -- all Sandy Paws dogs are "guaranteed"
and they are always adopted out on a "trial basis". If something
should go wrong, such as the dog doesn't get along with another pet for instance,
then the dog will be taken back by Sandy Paws and a new home found. Every
dog that leaves here is our responsibility for the rest of it's life -- if
ten years down the road, something were to happen and the family can no longer
keep the dog, then that dog comes back here. It doesn't go to Aunt Agatha
who really didn't want the dog to begin with. We know the dog and are better
able to place it in a home where it can live out it's remaining years in love
and peace.
There will be many follow up calls and/or visits to be sure that the transition
of the new pet is going along smoothly. We encourage new families to stay
in touch and ask questions if they want. Sandy Paws is always here to help
whenever it is needed.
If you are agreeable to the above terms and you want to adopt a Sandy Paws
Schipperke, please print a copy of our application and terms of adoption below,
fill them out and remit by fax to (406)-323-1863.
SURRENDERING
A DOG TO SANDY PAWS
If
you have a Schipperke that you would like to find a new home for or know of
someone who does, please contact us. We do foster the Schipperke's here to
access temperament and such. It may take some time to get the dog transported
to us (depending on where you are from) but we will take in the dog.
If you would like to "re-home" your dog, then you need to print
and fill out our Surrender form below before we will begin the arduous task
of finding your dog a new life. It not only gives us the history of the dog
but also awards us "ownership" so that we may be free to place him/her
in a new home.
Please fill out the Surrender form and fax back to (406)-323-1863.
LONG
DISTANCE ADOPTIONS
Sandy
Paws has had many long distance adoptions -- Wisconsin, Washington D.C., Seattle,
Salt Lake City, Denver. We will do long distance adoptions but the new owners
are responsible for the cost of transport, shipping crates etc. Some transports
can be handled on the ground by many driving volunteers and we here at Sandy
Paws will work tirelessly to figure out which transport will be best for the
dog and the new owners. If you are from another state, please feel free to
ask and we can discuss the possibilities!
